A Fun At-home Family Film Session
Maine film photography at-home session
I photographed Sofia and her family at their home in Portland, where we stayed indoors during the February snow and chill. It was a slow session (my favorite kind!) full of daily activities that her daughter loved. They played the guitar, played in the stuffed animal pit, read some books, and hung out in bed. A. was very interested in all of my cameras and film - especially the crinkly film wrapper - so there was lots of exploration and play.
My favorite moments were the quiet times in bed and on the couch. A. was full of giggles and moved fast around the house to all of her different favorite spots. The best spot was her animal toy pit - an absolute dream for anyone.
Documentary family photographs
My approach to family photography is to let moments unfold, following the kids lead. My job is not to control or force anything - in all honesty, that just gives me too much stress! It’s much easier and much more interesting to incorporate activities that the family loves and allow their personalities to come through. I hold my camera up to my face and just wait in these moments, and watch until people relax into themselves - then I press that shutter.
Grandparent memories
Sofia’s mom was visiting from a different state. We took the opportunity to capture some grandparent and grandchild moments on the couch. By this time, A. was ready for lunch, but we got some sweet cuddles despite this. I always love the opportunity to photograph extended families, as I often cherish those images of me and my grandparents when I was young.
