Midcoast Maine Family Film Photography Session At Home
I arrived to Miranda’s home on a golden fall afternoon, just as foliage was peaking outside their windows. We wanted to document the changing season - getting ready for the cold, and preparing for baby #3. I started the session in the living room where the light created beautiful shadows in their toy corner. They read books and snuggled on the couch, playing with a toy camera I brought along for the kids. Every kid is different, some are very very interested in my cameras and film, wanting to touch all the buttons, look through the viewfinder, and figure out how it all works. For those situations, I have a little film camera I give to them to play with. The photographs they take as reminders of their viewpoint from our time together.
We spent a slow afternoon in and around the home, photographing little everyday moments that preserved this fleeting time.
Family photography at home
I’ve said this before, but I’ll continue to scream it fro the rooftops if I have to - your home is the best place for a photography session. If you’re anything like me, you’ll look back on your life and think about all the memories your home stores. The books you read out on that chair in the living room, the porch chats, the family dinners.
This session celebrated home and the everyday moments that make it special.
The magic in the mundane
During our time together we sat around the kitchen table, played the piano, sipped on cocoa, and played outside. A fresh pile of leaves drew the kids in and we soaked up the last of the sun while they played in the yard.
During a session I like to have the family do an activity. It can be as simple as reading a book, playing a game, preparing a pot of tea. One day, this version of home will only exist in memory. At-home sessions preserves the way life looks and feels right now. No posing, no pressure, and nothing forced - just little time capsules for your future selves.
