A Newborn Family Photography Session At-Home in Maine
I first photographed this family over the summer in the their home as they awaited their second. It was a time of transition - they were beginning to pull up the last vegetables from their garden, their first was learning more words by the day, and they were preparing their home for the arrival of baby. Jess and Vanessa asked me to return just 1 month after Rafi was born. As I pulled into their driveaway, animals scattered, the goats greeted me, and the cold air smacked me in the face. I was incredibly thankful we were photographing indoors.
Lifestyle family photography at-home in Maine
It was early January and the holiday decorations were still strung up at home. The winter afternoon light streamed into their living room and playroom. Rafi was fighting off a nap and August wanted to show me some of his toys. They set about making a fire, snuggling on the couch, and reading a book in their corner nook. We embraced the harsh winter light and leaned into the coziness of winter in Maine.
The magic of family photography isn’t just in the big milestones—it’s in the quiet, everyday moments that make up your life at home. It’s also in the bit of chaos - the dog getting in the photo, soothing crying kids, spreading toys across the carpet, rolling around on the sofa. It’s these everyday moments - seemingly small details - that I get excited about preserving for families.
A twist on newborn photography
As a documentary family photographer I approach newborn photography with a laid back approach. I want you to do what you do everyday, to embrace the fleeting, hard, beautiful newborn moments. I find that being at home is the best way to put everyone at ease (baby included). No need to worry about getting everyone perfectly posed or forcing smiles; I simply document life as it is, so you can remember not just how it looked, but how it felt.
Because I realize the importance of documenting these moments of transition, I offer a maternity/newborn package. For those looking to document this season of change. Two session: maternity & newborn - so you can have photographs of your growing family.
Simplifying family photography sessions
Family photography doesn’t have to be complicated, posed, or stressful - it can be as simple as the life you’re already living. Sitting together with a favorite book, making a cup of tea, snuggling on the couch - these are the moments that matter just as much as the big milestones. And let’s be honest - how often are you frolicking in a grassy field together at sunset as a family? I know my family does not do this - we are at home, getting cozy on the couch, reading books, playing in the yard, working in the garden, etc. The key is this: family photography should be as simple as your everyday life. These are the times you’ll want to remember anyways! If the thought of a family session feels overwhelming, remember that it can be as easy as simple being together.
